Fearnley prevails vs Kumstat in Olbia Challenger second round as top seed
Jacob Fearnley's development and journey since graduating from Texas Christian University has not been straightforward to say the least and there have been many setbacks, but it feels like the Brit has turned a serious corner in this 2026 season.
Another clear indication of Fearnley turning a corner was beating the big-serving Czech Jan Kumstat in relatively routine fashion, a potential banana skin on any surface at Challenger level. Here I will break down things Fearnley applied well in this match and how that has been seen in a bigger sample size from the Brit this season in particular.
Kumstat announced himself on the Challenger stage with those quick-fire first three Challenger tour titles inside a month at Liberec, Hamburg and Prague respectively, but it was quite clear very early on here that he just was not in that kind of inspired form. Fearnley was essentially doing a good job of really altering and mixing up his patterns of play and even though Kumstat moves extremely well for a man of his stature, it is not a strength.
The biggest problematic feature for the Czech was that he could not get the desired service rhythm he needed and with his biggest asset being left in the locker room it impacted his confidence levels from the ground so clearly as he continued to leak plus one wild forehand errors and rarely was able to consistently get on top of points for sustained phases either. That was seen in the first break he conceded rather tamely.

The key for Fearnley was having that clarity of maintaining a very aggressive approach, didn't give the Czech any time to load and had a decent day behind the forehand wing too, which is always a huge plus for him.

The balance of control changed momentarily at the beginning of the second as Fearnley goes off the boil and Kumstat starts to build a slight bit of belief. But it was not to last and the way that Fearnley was able to conjure up the killer break of serve in the 2nd set came from one fantastic return of serve on the stretch that caught the Czech off guard and essentially placed in no mans land. That then followed by a great defensive return that fortunately clipped the top of the tape and set up a comfortable passing winner from Fearnley.

One last thing that needs to be mentioned was Fearnley's serving standards over the course of the match - in the opening set he made 80% of his first serves and won an impressive 95% of those. For a player that can have ups and downs in that department it was good to see and is up there as some of his best serving statistics for the season too.
Fearnley now moves onto the quarter-finals of the Olbia Challenger as the top seed and it will be intriguing to see whether he continues to go from strength to strength. He is well-placed for the title and in a good section of the draw additionally.
